You gotta be frakking kidding
Well, not much more to say about the Ms, except maybe just the word plummet. I'd attach a WAV of one of Wile E. Coyote's many precipitous freefalls, but what's the point? We've been here before, haven't we? I suppose the darker side of my soul is reflected by the fact that I'm less bitter about the Ms' Kramer-like pratfall out of contention than I am about the Yankees' Kramer-like entrance into yet another post-season. Boo. Hiss.
In other news:
Jane Wyman died. 93 years old; nominated for 4 Oscars (1 win), 2 Emmys, and 4 Golden Globes (3 wins); a career that includes some of the best films of the 40s and 50s: The Lost Weekend, The Yearling, Johnny Belinda, The Glass Menagerie, Stage Fright, and my personal favorites, the Douglas Sirk masterpieces Magnificent Obsession and All That Heaven Allows (gorgeously remade by Todd Haynes in 2002 as Far From Heaven).
And every headline I read about her this week reduced her to this: “Reagan's Ex.” For crying out loud. I mean, he was still a Democrat when they divorced in 1948, and her career as an actor completely eclipses his (his trophy shelf consists of a Razzie and a Golden Boot).
Seriously, shame on you people. Boo. Hiss.
And then:
3:10 to Yuma is out!
Haven't seen it yet, but I'm savoring the anticipation. The original with Glenn Ford is one of my favorite Westerns of all time, and I have to admit this remake looks far too kinetic to be a faithful adaptation of Elmore Leonard's original story. Still, the reviews I've heard give me high hopes — despite my previous reservations. After all, it wouldn't be the first time that a tense, contained, dialog-driven classic, based on a celebrated short story, was successfully remade into an explosive, big-budget action thriller. I have faith in Mangold. Give us something to cheer for.
